The Virunga Project is an interdisciplinary unit of study undertaken by Mme Hilger's French 1 class at Rancho Mirage High School during April and May 2015.
The intent of this unit is to build background knowledge of the following Pre-AP themes:
* Global Challenges (Economics, Environmental Issues, Human Rights, and Peace and War),
* Personal and Public Identities (Languages and Identity, Multiculturalism, Nationalism and Patriotism), and
* Families and Communities (Age and Class and Citizenship),
while incorporating the students' first, second, and third languages and in accordance with the California World Language Standards (Content 1.1; Communication 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, 1.5, and 1.6; Cultures 1.1 and 1.2; Structures 1.0, 1.1, and 1.2, Settings 1.1).

learning objectives
Students will be responsible for creating and writing the content of this website by combining their knowledge of French, English, Science, Social Studies, Math, and Media in order to:
- Identify the endangered species currently living in Virunga National Park
- Evaluate the park's conservation efforts to deter poaching and recover animal populations, such as mountain gorillas
- Analyze the effects of nonrenewable energy practices, such as deforestation for the charcoal trade and possible oil drilling, on the park
- Consider the sustainability and impact of renewable energy sources on the park and DRC citizens
- Perform due diligence on the nonprofit and governmental organizations that fund Virunga, as well as perform investment research on SOCO International
- Define microfinance and determine its benefits for DRC citizens and the local economy
- Describe colonization by Belgium and decolonization, as well as its effects on the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC)'s modern political structure and societal issues
- Compare and contrast conservation issues of endangered species in American national parks and Virunga National Park
- Analyze the effect of possible oil prospecting under Lake Edward in Virunga and the Keystone Pipeline in the USA
- Develop a call to action that engages readers to make a positive impact on societal issues, conservation efforts, and investment choices
