endangered speciesThe major endangered species that are living in the Virunga National Park are elephants and gorillas. Elephants are endangered because poachers want the tusks from the elephants, they take the head of the elephant, and leave the rest of the body. Villagers now take the meat from the dead elephant to be consumed. Within days the elephant will be completely gone. Poachers have slaughtered Virunga elephants over the years, reducing numbers from 3000 to approximately 400. ("Virunga National Park")
