The Democratic of Congo has a population of 77 million. Their official language is French and the people are called Congolese. Christianity and Catholicism is well spread throughout the Congolese population but Christianity is still the main religion of the D.R.C. Nearly ½ of the population is less than the age of 15, ¾ are under 30.

Music is by far the art form for which Congo is best known. Kinshasa, the DRC’s capital, a huge music centre. Most songs from the Democratic Republic of the Congo are sung in Lingala. The dance “Ndombolo” is currently a huge dance in the DRC.
This regions music is sometimes referred to ‘musique zairose’. A unique style of music was formed in the 1950s consisting of jazz and rumba. Today African music is known as soukous. Congolese people hand make their own instruments. In Goma, an annual Skiff arts festival is held as a showcase for the region’s music, poetry and films.

Commemorations of the Martyrs of independence is a holiday the Congolese celebrate on January 4th. Labour day and National Liberation day are celebrated on May 1 and May 17. Independence day is celebrated June 30th and Parents Day is celebrated on August 1. October 14; Army Day and the Anniversary of the Second Republic, observed on November 17 and November 24, respectively; and Christmas, celebrated on December 25.

Nearly two-thirds of people live in rural areas, in villages scattered across the country. Many rely on subsistence farming, growing food for their families.Certain indigenous peoples, such as the ‘pygmy’ Mbuti and Efe groups, still live a gypsy lifestyle in the forests, hunting wild animals, fishing and gathering plants, fruits and fungi.
The staple food in DR Congo is cassava. This root vegetable is often ground into a paste and served with plantains, fish or bushmeat. Grubs and caterpillars are also collected to provide protein.Nuts and fruit are widely grown, oranges and bananas are the most commonly available. |
