HydroElectric Dam
hydroelectricity
Hydroelectricity is the term defined as electricity generated by hydropower. The production of electrical power using the flow of water is the most widely used source of renewable energy. Hydropower is produced in 150 countries. Hydroelectricity is a relatively low cost, therefore making it a competitive source of renewable energy. The average cost of electricity from a hydro station larger than 10 megawatts is 3 to 5 U.S, cents per kilowatt-hour. It is a flexible source as well, because the amount electricity produced can be changed up or down very quickly to adapt to the changing energy demands. Constructing dams can interrupt the flow of rivers and can harm local ecosystems, and building large dams results in the displacement of people and wildlife.(Virunga National Park)

benefits to virunga
Aside from some of the flaws of the dam, it is bringing many benefits to the Virunga National Park and the villages around it. The dam is promoting socio economic development and security for the park. The area that is being generated by the Mutwanga hydroelectric plant is a big first step to future plans of helping to fund the park and the operations.(Virunga National Park) Once up and running, the plant can provide about 12.5 megawatts of clean energy to communities surrounding the park. The facility is also expected to produce fresh drinking water for more than one million residents living nearby. The funding for this $19.7 million project was provided by American philanthropist, Howard G. Buffett.(WWF) Emmanuel De Merode, director of Virunga National Park, states, “That small hydro-plant [is] only half a megawatt, and that’s the equivalent of about 40,000 light bulbs. [It’s] now responsible …for the creation of two small industries. One is the creation of a soap factory, and the other is a substance called papaya enzyme. It’s an organic substance produced in North Kivu. And both of those products can only be produced if there’s electricity. It’s only thanks to the national park that there is electricity.”(Voice of America)
suggested improvements
The dam is giving so many great opportunities to the area, but there are improvements that should be made. One big improvement that should be made is constructing a bigger hydropower plant. The one existing only generates enough energy for the surrounding villages, including the park. The bigger hydroelectric dam would be able to generate enough power for more than the one village around the area. The plant would also be able to produce power for more local businesses and industries. The new hydropower plant should be relocated as well. The construction of the existing plant resulted in the displacement of people and wildlife. The new hydroelectric dam should be constructed in an uncharted area, but not so much that the energy is not reachable. The existing dam is becoming very helpful, but that doesn’t mean that the beautiful wildlife of the DRC should be destroyed.
